The management of the Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH) is not leaving anything to chance in ensuring that the campus is safe from being used to spread Coronavirus which was detected in Lagos State last week.
Since the first case was confirmed, authorities have been making efforts to detect and contain the disease while also calling on citizens to avoid panicking or spreading unverified information about the disease.
As part of measures to mitigate the spread of Convid 19, the management of Lagos State Polytechnic on Monda ordered the commencement of screening for everyone seeking to enter the lkorodu campus of the institution.
Health officials were stationed at the institution’s First gate to screen students, staff, visitors and others going into the institution premises.
It was gathered that same exercise is also being conducted at the LASPOTECH third gate.
This exercise reportedly caused long queue as many students stayed for hours before being screened and allowed to enter the school.
The students, though agreed that the screening is a proactive one, complained about staying long on the queue for the exercise and charged management of the institution to provide more screening channels and equipment to hasten the process and make it more effective.
They also protested against subjecting only students, non-academic staff members and others to the screening while lecturers and other senior staff of the institution were reportedly allowed to enter the institution’s premises without being made to go through the screening.
“It’s a good thing and right step to contain the deadly virus but this stress is damn too much. The management needs to make more screening equipment available and create more screening points so that we can get screened and allowed into the campus in few minutes and not hours”, a student told our reporter.
“Laudable but is the screening only for students, workers and others? Why are lecturers and other senior staff of the school not subjected to the screening. This is making me to wonder if they have immunity against the virus”, another student protested.
Another student, while also speaking, stated :
“As much as this can be seen as a proactive step, I have reservation over the process. There is shortage of screening devices and we are being made to stay here for hours. They need to improve on this because we cannot be queueing for hours on daily basis to gain entrance into the campus”.
In a chat with the Deputy Registrar, Information/Public Relations Officer of the institution, Mr Lanre Kuye, he stated that the management of LAPSOTECH is being pro-active by introducing screening at the institution’s gates to contain coronavirus spread.
“It’s good for the community. We are being proactive to prevent covid. They should bear with us. It’s for the good of everyone”, he stated while pleading with the students and others affected by the screening.
The LASPOTECH’s image maker, who stated that he went through the screening before gaining entry into the campus, denied any preferential treatment in the screening exercise.
“That’s not correct. I went through the screening too”.
